Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
D-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB+
The phones sank the Chargers this weekend: D-. The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 204 on J. Michael Sturdivant a full 42 spots early.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Getting Thieneman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick35
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
A reach for Olaivavega Ioane in pick 35; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick39
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
Elijah Sarratt at slot 39 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
The board had Dillon Thieneman higher than the 56th pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick70
Rnd3
Gabe Jacas
They left a pile of value on the table to take Gabe Jacas this early at the Round 3 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87
Rnd3
Whit Weeks
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Whit Weeks. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick122
Rnd4
Logan Jones
A reach on Logan Jones in the 122nd overall pick; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick142
Rnd5
Iapani Laloulu
A straight-up fair deal on Iapani Laloulu at pick No. 142, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick143
Rnd5
Drew Allar
They took Drew Allar at par in Round 5, Pick 4, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick184
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Patrick Payton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick204
Rnd6
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant at the 204th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
