Pick DRAFTING FOR THEPanthers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall

TradesB-
FutureB-
The Panthers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. You can draft well and still miss the point. The Panthers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to cornerback, which was the need that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They will need Bell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Sturdivant falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick33
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at pick No. 33, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick65
Rnd3
Byron Murphy II
A tidy little value on Byron Murphy II in No. 65, a step better than break-even. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick101
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
A real head-scratcher, Jaheim Bell in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick138
Rnd5
Tahj Brooks
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tahj Brooks. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick164
Rnd5
J. Michael Sturdivant
They let J. Michael Sturdivant come to them and pounced at the 164th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick180
Rnd6
Jalon Daniels
They paid up for Jalon Daniels at the 180th pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick222
Rnd7
Omar Speights
No edge and no loss on Omar Speights in slot 222; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
