Draft Grade — Steelers
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Steelers a B-. Somebody in pick 76 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Omar Cooper Jr., the No. 55 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The Jatta pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In slot 21 they get a three-down second-level presence. A real need, handled.
Pick53
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
Value with a capital V on Emmanuel Pregnon in No. 53, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick76
Rnd3
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the 76th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick85
Rnd3
Dontay Corleone
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dontay Corleone at the 85th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick99
Rnd3
Ja'Kobi Lane
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ja'Kobi Lane in slot 99. The roster fit checks out.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
Jalon Kilgore at the Round 4 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick135
Rnd4
Bud Clark
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 135, where Bud Clark graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick159
Rnd5
Drew Allar
They let Drew Allar come to them and pounced at pick 159. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick213
Rnd6
Zxavian Harris
A straight-up fair deal on Zxavian Harris at Round 6, Pick 34, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick214
Rnd6
Jeremiah Wright
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Wright went about where he belonged in No. 214. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick224
Rnd7
Isaiah Jatta
A real head-scratcher, Isaiah Jatta in the 224th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick237
Rnd7
Eli Heidenreich
Eli Heidenreich in pick 237 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
