Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D-
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureC
The Bears answered their biggest question with Williams. Grade: D-.

The Tanner McLachlan selection is the head-turner. The Bears reached 49 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.

For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. The McCormick pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In No. 1 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick20 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick 20 they get a cornerstone up front, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick23 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In the 23rd pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick46 Rnd2 Darius Robinson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Darius Robinson at the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick51 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Value with a capital V on Payton Wilson in pick No. 51, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 11 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick107 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at the 107th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick110 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
No edge and no loss on Zak Zinter in the 110th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick122 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
Value said wait; Luke McCaffrey in slot 122 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick129 Rnd4 Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III in No. 129 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick157 Rnd5 Tanner McLachlan
They talked themselves into Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 157, and the board did not agree. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick166 Rnd5 Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson in pick 166 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick167 Rnd5 Tahj Washington
They liked Tahj Washington enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick177 Rnd6 Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick in Round 6, Pick 2 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick183 Rnd6 Ty'Ron Hopper
They did well to land Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 183, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick195 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
Nice patience on Dwight McGlothern, who had no business lasting to slot 195. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick225 Rnd7 Garret Greenfield
Garret Greenfield at the 225th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick230 Rnd7 Myles Murphy
A reach on Myles Murphy in No. 230; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick232 Rnd7 Ryan Watts
No drama and no debate, Ryan Watts went about where he belonged in pick 232. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
