Williams should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Steelers came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Landing Williams that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Baker has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Spending an early pick on offensive lineman with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Jordan Morgan
In pick No. 27 they get protection for the quarterback. Need was not the driver here.
Pick66
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick84
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Sedrick Van Pran, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
Pick120
Rnd4
James Williams
A premium they did not need to pay, James Williams a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick121
Rnd4
Cam Hart
Cam Hart at pick 121 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It fills a real need, too.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Nice patience on Jarrian Jones, who had no business lasting to slot 133. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick158
Rnd5
Javon Baker
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javon Baker in the 158th overall pick, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick198
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Value said wait; Gabe Hall in pick No. 198 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick238
Rnd7
Isaiah Williams
A wide receiver of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 18 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
