Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
D
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureA+
The Commanders bled value on every deal, hence the D. The Commanders put a flag in the ground for Dominic Zvada, 99 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Reese value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In pick No. 24 they get a green-dot type in the middle, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick50
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
A tidy bit of business in slot 50, where Dillon Thieneman graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick71
Rnd3
Tyreak Sapp
Tyreak Sapp at Round 3, Pick 7 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick107
Rnd4
Emmett Johnson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Emmett Johnson in No. 107. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick145
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
They jumped the gun on Davison Igbinosun, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick147
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
Aaron Graves at the Round 5 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick155
Rnd5
Albert Regis
A conviction pick on Albert Regis at pick 155 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick185
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Nothing to complain about; Xavier Nwankpa went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick186
Rnd6
Josh Cuevas
A big swing on Josh Cuevas at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick196
Rnd6
Bud Clark
They paid a round early for Bud Clark in slot 196, more than the board wanted. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick203
Rnd6
Dominic Zvada
A real head-scratcher, Dominic Zvada in the 203rd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick223
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
They reached into another round for Trey Zuhn III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
