Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Commanders: B. The Commanders clearly saw something nobody else did in Patrick Payton, taking him 66 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They banked enough surplus on Thieneman to cover a lot of smaller sins. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In slot 26 they get a three-down second-level presence. More want than need.
Pick60
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Dillon Thieneman at pick No. 60 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick71
Rnd3
Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick91
Rnd3
Daylen Everette
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Daylen Everette at the 91st pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick126
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance at No. 126 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in Round 5, Pick 7 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Patrick Payton. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick196
Rnd6
Zxavian Harris
They talked themselves into Zxavian Harris at No. 196, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Pick223
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III at the 223rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
