FutureA+
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Commanders. The Commanders clearly saw something nobody else did in James Smith, taking him 56 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Nwankpa value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick60
Rnd2
CJ Allen
Quietly one of the better values of the day, CJ Allen at slot 60. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick78
Rnd3
Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kenyatta Jackson Jr.. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at pick No. 111 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick152
Rnd5
Davison Igbinosun
Davison Igbinosun in pick 152 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick179
Rnd5
James Smith
James Smith at the 179th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick192
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa slid further than he should have, and Round 6, Pick 11 is lovely value for the safety. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick203
Rnd6
Daevin Hobbs
Daevin Hobbs in Round 6, Pick 22 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick229
Rnd7
Brett Norfleet
A real head-scratcher, Brett Norfleet in the 229th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick257
Rnd7
Da'Shawn Womack
They left a pile of value on the table to take Da'Shawn Womack this early at No. 257. A need, and now a little less of one.
