The Commanders won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+. Nobody else had Keaten Wade anywhere near pick 185. The Commanders did, by 105 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Hill Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, tight end and other spots. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Weigman.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In the 28th overall pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick50
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
A curious use of No. 50. Wide receiver, tight end and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Anthony Hill Jr. did not.
Pick69
Rnd3
Lee Hunter
Value with a capital V on Lee Hunter in pick No. 69, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick71
Rnd3
Malik Muhammad
Malik Muhammad at pick 71 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick109
Rnd4
Davison Igbinosun
Value said wait; Davison Igbinosun in Round 4, Pick 9 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick119
Rnd4
Trey Moore
A real head-scratcher, Trey Moore in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick145
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in Round 5, Pick 7, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick185
Rnd6
Keaten Wade
A big swing on Keaten Wade at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jordan Hall
Jordan Hall at the 196th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick223
Rnd7
Conner Weigman
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Conner Weigman at No. 223. The roster fit checks out.
