Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureA+
The Commanders let Joly fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+. The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Justin Joly, the No. 106 name on the board, sitting there at the 145th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
They will need James to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Trevor Penning pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerpiece for the ground game at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick145
Rnd5
Justin Joly
Justin Joly at pick No. 145 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick185
Rnd6
Brenen Thompson
Taking Brenen Thompson in pick 185 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr. at slot 196 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick215
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
A clean, defensible pick in Round 6, Pick 36 with a little surplus value in Trey Zuhn III. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick223
Rnd7
Peyton Bowen
A reasonable price with a little left over, Peyton Bowen in the 223rd pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kamran James
They reached a country mile for Kamran James at the 249th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
