Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Commanders did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Michael Harris a full 72 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

The back end got a real overhaul.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick7 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In pick 7 they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value.
Pick71 Rnd3 Ja'Kobi Lane
Ja'Kobi Lane at pick No. 71 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick145 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
A wild overpay on Patrick Payton in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick185 Rnd6 Josh Moten
Good price on Josh Moten in the 185th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick196 Rnd6 Michael Harris
They left a pile of value on the table to take Michael Harris this early at Round 6, Pick 17. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick223 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
Riley Mahlman at No. 223 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
