Best value of the weekend goes to the Colts for Lawson: B-. Call it larceny. Deontae Lawson sat on the board until slot 78, and the Colts did not need to be asked twice. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They are betting Hall proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The back end got a real overhaul.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick47
Rnd2
Dillon Thieneman
Good price on Dillon Thieneman in pick No. 47, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick78
Rnd3
Deontae Lawson
Deontae Lawson at Round 3, Pick 14 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick113
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at the 113th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick154
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Drew Allar in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216
Rnd6
Riley Mahlman
A reach for Riley Mahlman in pick 216; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
A conviction pick on Jordan Hall at No. 230 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick253
Rnd7
Fred Davis II
They paid up for Fred Davis II at slot 253 when waiting would have done the job. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
