Draft Grade — Colts
Overall
C-
ValueF
NeedA-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Colts bet the future on Milroe. The board says C-. There is reaching, and then there is Jalen Milroe at the 15th pick. The Colts jumped the board by 244 and dared it to prove them wrong. A weekend of give and take that grades a C-.
So much rides on Jalen Milroe that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Moore pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
If Jalen Milroe and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Jalen Milroe
In the 15th pick they get the face of the franchise, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick47
Rnd2
Jermaine Burton
They paid up for Jermaine Burton at the 47th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick79
Rnd3
Jase McClellan
They talked themselves into Jase McClellan at No. 79, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick115
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
A want over a need in pick No. 115: Malachi Moore adds a defensive back while tight end, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick152
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick193
Rnd6
Ajani Cornelius
Ajani Cornelius slipping to pick 193 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick255
Rnd7
Ja'Corey Brooks
A big swing on Ja'Corey Brooks at the 255th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick256
Rnd7
Jordan Whittington
The board fumbled Jordan Whittington all the way to the 256th pick, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
