FutureD+
The Colts bled value on every deal, hence the D-. Somebody took the Colts to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. Put together, it is a D-.
With interior defensive lineman and linebacker unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. Owens has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Laumea at that price is a win they earned.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In slot 16 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A real need, handled.
Pick28
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In No. 28 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick29
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 29th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick81
Rnd3
Cade Stover
Cade Stover at the 81st pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick82
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A want over a need in pick 82: Khyree Jackson adds a cornerback while interior defensive lineman and linebacker keeps waiting.
Pick117
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen is a better player than the Round 4 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick118
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
A reasonable price with a little left over, Matt Goncalves in Round 4, Pick 18. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick128
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 128 with a little surplus value in Johnny Wilson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick151
Rnd5
Sataoa Laumea
They barely believed it either: Sataoa Laumea still on the board at slot 151. It fills a real need, too.
Pick164
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
By-the-book stuff, Javion Cohen at the 164th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick191
Rnd6
Joe Milton III
Joe Milton III at No. 191 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick234
Rnd7
Tyler Owens
They reached a country mile for Tyler Owens at the 234th pick, and the board is aghast. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
