FutureA+
The Colts let Nwankpa fall into their laps, and walked away with a A-. You could see the war room lean forward. Xavier Nwankpa at No. 125 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is not that Nwankpa is a bad player; it is that the Colts had louder needs to answer first. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick88
Rnd3
Shavon Revel Jr.
Shavon Revel Jr. at the 88th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick102
Rnd4
Miller Moss
A quarterback of that caliber at pick No. 102 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Keon Sabb
You do not let a safety like Keon Sabb reach pick 114 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick121
Rnd4
Josh Simmons
They robbed the room for Josh Simmons here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick125
Rnd4
Xavier Nwankpa
A surprising call. With tight end, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent No. 125 on Xavier Nwankpa, a safety they were not short of.
Pick159
Rnd5
Riley Leonard
The board fumbled Riley Leonard all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jonah Coleman
They will replay Jonah Coleman at Round 6, Pick 20 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick197
Rnd6
Antonio Williams
They barely believed it either: Antonio Williams still on the board at slot 197. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick233
Rnd7
J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis at Round 7, Pick 19 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
