Draft Grade — Saints
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Saints.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Saints took Eric Gentry at the Round 5 slot, roughly 99 spots before his name belonged. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Banks where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick8 Rnd1 Caleb Downs
In the 8th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the back end. Need was not the driver here.
Pick42 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
Caleb Banks at No. 42 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick73 Rnd3 Malachi Lawrence
They talked themselves into Malachi Lawrence at pick No. 73, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132 Rnd4 Mike Washington Jr.
Mike Washington Jr. at the 132nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick136 Rnd4 Ted Hurst
A premium they did not need to pay, Ted Hurst a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick148 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick170 Rnd5 Eric Gentry
Eric Gentry at the 170th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick188 Rnd6 Colbie Young
A wild overpay on Colbie Young in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
