The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

The 49ers clearly saw something nobody else did in Luke Lachey, taking him 65 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That Bryant pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 43. The roster fit checks out.

This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Alexander in the 75th overall pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Wilson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jacob Parrish
Jacob Parrish in the 113th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick138 Rnd4 Luke Lachey
A big swing on Luke Lachey at No. 138, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick147 Rnd5 Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson in slot 147 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick151 Rnd5 Nazir Stackhouse
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nazir Stackhouse well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.

Pat Bryant slid further than he should have, and No. 160 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.

Cam Jackson at Round 7, Pick 11 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt at the 249th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.

A tidy little value on Teddye Buchanan in the 252nd overall pick, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
