Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall C
ValueD- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A weekend that raised as many questions as it answered. The Bengals get a C.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Bengals took Jalen Thompson a full 70 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. It washes out to a C, no better and no worse.

The Bell pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

If Anto Saka and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Anto Saka
In pick 25 they get juice off the edge, a steep price for the projection. Need was not the driver here.
Pick57 Rnd2 Dontay Corleone
They talked themselves into Dontay Corleone at No. 57, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick89 Rnd3 Chris Bell
Chris Bell in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
They let Tacario Davis come to them and pounced at pick No. 125. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick164 Rnd5 Kage Casey
They did well to land Kage Casey in the 164th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick203 Rnd6 Jalen Thompson
Jalen Thompson in Round 6, Pick 27 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick238 Rnd7 Jack Velling
They liked Jack Velling enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick252 Rnd7 Kamran James
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kamran James in the 252nd pick, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
