You can hear the double-takes from here. The Panthers took Rasheen Ali at slot 222, roughly 67 spots before his name belonged.

They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.

The Panthers indulged a want in Smith while a need in offensive lineman and safety stayed open. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
