Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
C+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureA
Belton should have been long gone. The Browns pounced, and earned a C+. Somebody took the Browns to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. A mixed bag that lands at C+.
The Belton steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Vinson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
If Nick Emmanwori and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick36
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Nick Emmanwori at pick 36 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick39
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
They will replay Walter Nolen at pick No. 39 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick58
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
A tidy little value on TreVeyon Henderson in the 58th pick, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
They liked Donovan Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 67. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick72
Rnd3
Darien Porter
A straight-up fair deal on Darien Porter at the 72nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick79
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
Fair-plus on Elijah Arroyo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick88
Rnd3
Isaiah Bond
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Isaiah Bond at the Round 3 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick94
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Skattebo. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick99
Rnd3
Smael Mondon Jr.
The board had cheaper options than Smael Mondon Jr. at No. 99, and it noticed. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick104
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Alexander well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick141
Rnd5
Anthony Belton
They barely believed it either: Anthony Belton still on the board at the 141st overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick179
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
A wild overpay on Jack Kiser in Round 6, Pick 3, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick189
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
They talked themselves into Carson Vinson at slot 189, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
