Draft Grade — Bears

The Bears answered their biggest question with Williams. Grade: D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bears did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In pick No. 1 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In slot 9 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick28
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In the 28th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick75
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
Javon Bullard slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 11 is lovely value for the safety. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jamari Thrash
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jamari Thrash at pick 99. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick111
Rnd4
Marist Liufau
You do not let a linebacker like Marist Liufau reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick123
Rnd4
Max Melton
Max Melton is a better player than No. 123 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick143
Rnd5
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in the 143rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jawhar Jordan
Jawhar Jordan in pick No. 246 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
