Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall D+
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
The Chargers bet the future on McCarthy. The board says D+.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Cedric Gray at No. 69, a reach of 45 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It grades a D+, and the process earned it.

The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Paul at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the 1st overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick5 Rnd1 Brock Bowers
A straight-up fair deal on Brock Bowers at pick No. 5, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick9 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get their guy under center for the next decade, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Pick37 Rnd2 Kris Jenkins
The board had cheaper options than Kris Jenkins at No. 37, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69 Rnd3 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick75 Rnd3 Blake Corum
A reach on Blake Corum in the 75th pick; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick105 Rnd4 Patrick Paul
They barely believed it either: Patrick Paul still on the board at No. 105. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick110 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
They left a pile of value on the table to take Mohamed Kamara this early at the 110th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick122 Rnd4 Beaux Limmer
No edge and no loss on Beaux Limmer in pick 122; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick158 Rnd5 Khristian Boyd
This one needs a full-page explanation: Khristian Boyd in pick No. 158, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick181 Rnd6 Kitan Oladapo
Kitan Oladapo at Round 6, Pick 6 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick198 Rnd6 Jaylen Harrell
They paid a round early for Jaylen Harrell in the Round 6 slot, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick225 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at the 225th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick253 Rnd7 Josh Wallace
Josh Wallace at slot 253 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
