Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall D
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Chargers left with their quarterback, and a D to match.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chargers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Barrett has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. On value alone, Coker makes the weekend a net positive.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick5 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 5 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection.
Pick11 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
They did well to land Olumuyiwa Fashanu in pick 11, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick28 Rnd1 Xavier Worthy
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Worthy this early at the 28th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick37 Rnd2 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
They paid sticker price for Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in No. 37, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick105 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at Round 4, Pick 5 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick108 Rnd4 Gabriel Murphy
A straight-up fair deal on Gabriel Murphy at slot 108, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick110 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
They paid up for Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick129 Rnd4 Audric Estime
A reasonable price with a little left over, Audric Estime in the 129th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick140 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
The board had cheaper options than Luke McCaffrey at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick225 Rnd7 Michael Barrett
This one needs a full-page explanation: Michael Barrett in pick 225, miles early. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick234 Rnd7 Trente Jones
Trente Jones in the 234th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The roster fit checks out.
Pick253 Rnd7 Jalen Coker
Jalen Coker in the 253rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
