Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesB FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Chargers, and a B- to prove it.

Nobody had Jamaree Caldwell this high, and it is not close. The Chargers reached 117 spots to get him at slot 215. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

On value alone, Ransom makes the weekend a net positive. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Colston Loveland
In pick No. 25 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick55 Rnd2 Marcus Mbow
Marcus Mbow in the 55th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick86 Rnd3 Omarr Norman-Lott
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Omarr Norman-Lott at No. 86. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick89 Rnd3 TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at the 89th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
A tidy bit of business in slot 124, where Jared Wilson graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
Pick159 Rnd5 Damien Martinez
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Damien Martinez. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick167 Rnd5 Mitchell Evans
Mitchell Evans is a better player than Round 5, Pick 28 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick177 Rnd5 Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock at the Round 5 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick183 Rnd6 Lathan Ransom
Taking Lathan Ransom in the 183rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick201 Rnd6 Ty Hamilton
A big swing on Ty Hamilton at pick No. 201, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell at the 215th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick220 Rnd7 Kyle Monangai
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kyle Monangai in pick 220. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick253 Rnd7 Bryson Nesbit
Bryson Nesbit in No. 253 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
