Draft Grade — Chargers

The phones sank the Chargers this weekend: C. Somebody took the Chargers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. For now it grades a C, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. However the rest shakes out, Young at that price is a win they earned. The Smith reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most.
Hit on Benjamin Morrison and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick Analysis
Pick15
Rnd1
Benjamin Morrison
In pick 15 they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick16
Rnd1
Harold Perkins Jr.
In the 16th pick they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick34
Rnd2
Ashton Jeanty
A clean, defensible pick in slot 34 with a little surplus value in Ashton Jeanty. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick162
Rnd6
Dane Key
Dane Key in pick No. 162 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick207
Rnd7
Tim Smith
They paid up for Tim Smith at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick209
Rnd7
Colbie Young
A quiet steal in No. 209: Colbie Young for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
