FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Chargers a B-. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chargers started one anyway for Braylan Shelby, 42 picks ahead of schedule. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Getting Washington where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
PJ Williams
In slot 22 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick55
Rnd2
A'Mauri Washington
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, A'Mauri Washington in pick No. 55, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick92
Rnd3
Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It fills a real need, too.
Pick123
Rnd4
Xavier Lucas
Xavier Lucas in No. 123 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick133
Rnd4
Justin Evans
Justin Evans at Round 4, Pick 33 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick202
Rnd6
Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at the 202nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
