Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
Grand theft in slot 201: the Chargers steal Mafah and grade out a B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Phil Mafah got past him. The Chargers do not have to explain a thing at No. 201. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They will need Taylor to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Interior defensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In No. 22 they get an anchor for the defensive front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the 55th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick86
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at Round 3, Pick 22 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick124
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at the 124th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick159
Rnd5
Ollie Gordon II
No drama and no debate, Ollie Gordon II went about where he belonged in pick No. 159. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick177
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
Value with a capital V on Ajani Cornelius in slot 177, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick183
Rnd6
Jordan Hancock
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Hancock at pick 183, and it noticed. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick201
Rnd6
Phil Mafah
Phil Mafah in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick215
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
The board fumbled Luke Lachey all the way to the 215th pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick220
Rnd7
Kyle Williams
They robbed the room for Kyle Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick253
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
A tidy little value on Hunter Wohler in pick No. 253, a step better than break-even. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
