FutureB-
The Chargers turned the phones into found money: B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 52 spots for DeSean Bishop, and value like that does not grow back. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Moore pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Will Echoles
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick26
Rnd1
Trey'Dez Green
In the 26th pick they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Pick27
Rnd1
David Stone
In pick 27 they get an anchor for the defensive front, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Zabien Brown
They paid sticker price for Zabien Brown in pick No. 35, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick45
Rnd2
Bryant Wesco Jr.
A conviction pick on Bryant Wesco Jr. at Round 2, Pick 13 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick66
Rnd3
Anthony Smith
They talked themselves into Anthony Smith at the 66th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick81
Rnd3
Raleek Brown
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Raleek Brown. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick99
Rnd3
Nico Iamaleava
Nico Iamaleava slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the quarterback. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick100
Rnd3
Samson Okunlola
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 36: Samson Okunlola for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Pick103
Rnd4
Terry Moore
They robbed the room for Terry Moore here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick117
Rnd4
Iapani Laloulu
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Iapani Laloulu in No. 117, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick142
Rnd5
Elijah Paige
Elijah Paige in pick 142 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jayce Brown
Jayce Brown at pick No. 163 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick170
Rnd5
Drew Bobo
Drew Bobo in the 170th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick174
Rnd5
Xavier Lucas
You do not let a cornerback like Xavier Lucas reach pick 174 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick207
Rnd6
Jake Guarnera
Jake Guarnera in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209
Rnd6
C.J. Fite
A reasonable price with a little left over, C.J. Fite in slot 209. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215
Rnd6
Braylan Shelby
Braylan Shelby at Round 6, Pick 34 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217
Rnd6
Edrees Farooq
Edrees Farooq at No. 217 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick222
Rnd7
DeSean Bishop
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeSean Bishop well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick236
Rnd7
Johntay Cook
A tidy little value on Johntay Cook in the 236th pick, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick240
Rnd7
Addison Nichols
The board had cheaper options than Addison Nichols at the 240th overall pick, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick242
Rnd7
DJ Vonnahme
DJ Vonnahme in slot 242 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick246
Rnd7
Jackson Arnold
Fair-plus on Jackson Arnold, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
