Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall C
ValueF NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
A mixed bag for the Chargers, and a C to match.

The rest of the league had time to spare on RJ Harvey; the Chargers did not wait, grabbing him 173 spots ahead at slot 162. The final tally is a middling C.

Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They banked enough surplus on McCord to cover a lot of smaller sins.

They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

If Kenneth Grant and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In pick No. 15 they get a disruptive interior force, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick47 Rnd2 Xavier Nwankpa
They reached a country mile for Xavier Nwankpa at No. 47, and the board is aghast. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick79 Rnd3 Dylan Fairchild
They read the board right and Dylan Fairchild was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 15. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111 Rnd4 Nick Martin
A big swing on Nick Martin at pick 111, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick143 Rnd5 David Bailey
No edge and no loss on David Bailey in the 143rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick162 Rnd6 RJ Harvey
RJ Harvey in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick175 Rnd6 Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at pick No. 175 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick207 Rnd7 Kyle McCord
A quarterback of that caliber at the 207th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick209 Rnd7 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
