The Chargers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-. Nobody had Jaleel Johnson this high, and it is not close. The Chargers reached 61 spots to get him at the Round 7 slot.
They banked enough surplus on Washington to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In the end it comes back to Trevor Goosby, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Trevor Goosby
They took Trevor Goosby at par in pick 9, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Pick11
Rnd1
Leonard Moore
In slot 11 they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Kade Pieper
A reach for Kade Pieper in the 33rd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick67
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
They will replay A'Mauri Washington at Round 3, Pick 3 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick103
Rnd4
Samson Okunlola
Samson Okunlola at No. 103 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick135
Rnd4
Marcus Neal Jr.
They read the board right and Marcus Neal Jr. was the payoff at the 135th overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick139
Rnd5
Devin McCuin
Devin McCuin in pick 139 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick150
Rnd5
Brandon Inniss
Brandon Inniss in slot 150 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick180
Rnd6
Whit Weeks
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Whit Weeks in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jaleel Johnson
A big swing on Jaleel Johnson at pick No. 223, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick235
Rnd7
Andrew Rappleyea
No edge and no loss on Andrew Rappleyea in Round 7, Pick 14; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick237
Rnd7
Gunner Stockton
Gunner Stockton at No. 237 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
