Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall C
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Chargers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the C.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chargers took Ty French at pick 207, roughly 37 spots before his name belonged. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Getting Judkins where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.

Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Abdul Carter
In pick No. 15 they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick47 Rnd2 Quinshon Judkins
Quinshon Judkins in the 47th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick79 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge in Round 3, Pick 15 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick101 Rnd4 Brennan Presley
They reached a country mile for Brennan Presley at pick 101, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick111 Rnd4 Clay Webb
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Clay Webb in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick133 Rnd5 Jaheim Oatis
They paid a round early for Jaheim Oatis in slot 133, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick162 Rnd6 Bryson Nesbit
Circle this one: Bryson Nesbit at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick165 Rnd6 Maxwell Hairston
Maxwell Hairston in the 165th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick175 Rnd6 Thor Griffith
The board had cheaper options than Thor Griffith at pick No. 175, and it noticed. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick207 Rnd7 Ty French
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ty French in pick 207, miles early. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209 Rnd7 Preston Stone
A tidy bit of business in slot 209, where Preston Stone graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
