Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureA+
A solid, sensible weekend for the Cowboys: B. You can draft well and still miss the point. The Cowboys did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to cornerback, which was the need that mattered most.
The Conner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They banked enough surplus on Sampson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get an anchor for the defensive front, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Dylan Sampson
They let Dylan Sampson come to them and pounced at pick 76. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick149
Rnd5
Sai'vion Jones
They did well to land Sai'vion Jones in the 149th pick, just ahead of his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick171
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 171 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
They jumped the gun on Vernon Broughton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick204
Rnd6
Oronde Gadsden II
The board had Oronde Gadsden II higher than slot 204, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick211
Rnd6
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson slipping to the 211th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick239
Rnd7
Theo Wease Jr.
They liked Theo Wease Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Hayden Conner well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
