Draft Grade — Bears
Overall F
ValueB- NeedB- TradesF FutureF
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a F.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bears would have aced it. Trajan Jeffcoat at the Round 7 slot is 57 spots clear of where he belonged.

They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.

The Bears indulged a want in Solomon while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

On value alone, Beebe makes the weekend a net positive. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 Caleb Williams
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Pick8 Rnd1 Marvin Harrison Jr.
In slot 8 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick9 Rnd1 Joe Alt
In No. 9 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Pick36 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in pick 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick67 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brenden Rice. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick101 Rnd4 Trey Benson
Trey Benson at the 101st pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103 Rnd4 Cooper Beebe
They barely believed it either: Cooper Beebe still on the board at Round 4, Pick 3. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick111 Rnd4 Ben Sinnott
Ben Sinnott at slot 111 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick117 Rnd4 Javon Solomon
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman untouched.
Pick123 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey at the 123rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick138 Rnd5 Brandon Coleman
They reached into another round for Brandon Coleman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick152 Rnd5 Tahj Washington
Tahj Washington in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick181 Rnd6 Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at No. 181 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick189 Rnd6 Tanner McLachlan
They talked themselves into Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 189, and the board did not agree. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick199 Rnd6 Keith Randolph Jr.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Keith Randolph Jr.. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick206 Rnd6 Jowon Briggs
They reached a country mile for Jowon Briggs at the 206th pick, and the board is aghast. A pick in search of a role on this roster.
Pick211 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
They read the board right and Joe Milton III was the payoff at slot 211. It fills a real need, too.
Pick220 Rnd6 Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford in the 220th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick234 Rnd7 Trey Knox
Trey Knox at pick 234 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick240 Rnd7 Ryan Watts
They went early on Ryan Watts in No. 240, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick246 Rnd7 Trajan Jeffcoat
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trajan Jeffcoat in Round 7, Pick 26, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
