Emeritus DRAFTING FOR THEBengals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Bengals a B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Bengals did exactly that with Miyan Williams in pick 224. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
They banked enough surplus on Greenfield to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
Pick49
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
No drama and no debate, Xavier Worthy went about where he belonged in No. 49. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick80
Rnd3
Renardo Green
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Renardo Green. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick97
Rnd3
McKinnley Jackson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, McKinnley Jackson well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick115
Rnd4
Zak Zinter
A quiet steal in the 115th overall pick: Zak Zinter for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick149
Rnd5
Marist Liufau
Marist Liufau in slot 149 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
Pick194
Rnd6
Jaylen Harrell
They jumped the gun on Jaylen Harrell, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick214
Rnd6
Erick All
Erick All slipping to Round 6, Pick 39 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224
Rnd7
Miyan Williams
Miyan Williams at pick No. 224 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick237
Rnd7
Daijahn Anthony
Daijahn Anthony in the 237th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick238
Rnd7
Garret Greenfield
Circle this one: Garret Greenfield at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
