No fireworks, just a tidy B for the Patriots.

You can draft well and still miss the point. The Patriots did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to interior defensive lineman, which was the need that mattered most.

The Ersery pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That Alexander pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick4 Rnd1 Abdul Carter

In pick No. 4 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.

Pick38 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
