The Cardinals cashed the board's mistake on Barrett: B+. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Michael Barrett got past him. The Cardinals do not have to explain a thing at No. 225. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. With quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Reaching for Jefferson left real value on the table behind him.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
They took Kool-Aid McKinstry at par in pick 11, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick17
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In No. 17 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Amarius Mims
A tidy bit of business in slot 35, where Amarius Mims graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick54
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu in pick No. 54 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jack Sawyer
Jack Sawyer at the 67th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick71
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
By-the-book stuff, Ja'Lynn Polk at the 71st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick73
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kingsley Suamataia in Round 3, Pick 9. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick81
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick86
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at pick 86 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick104
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tommy Eichenberg. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick133
Rnd4
Khyree Jackson
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take Khyree Jackson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Pick165
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore in pick No. 165 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jordan Jefferson
Value said wait; Jordan Jefferson in the 224th overall pick says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick225
Rnd7
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett at Round 7, Pick 5 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Aki Ogunbiyi
Aki Ogunbiyi at the 227th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick256
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
The board had Tahj Washington higher than No. 256, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
