FutureA+
Quarterback settled, Maye in the fold, and a D+ for the Cardinals. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cardinals did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Johnson. The veteran additions, Chase Young chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Ladd McConkey
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick 35. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick66
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
They did well to land Ruke Orhorhoro in No. 66, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71
Rnd3
Austin Booker
Austin Booker at the 71st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick90
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Nothing to complain about; Patrick Paul went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick104
Rnd4
DJ James
DJ James in the 104th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick138
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing at slot 138 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick157
Rnd5
Trevin Wallace
Trevin Wallace at slot 157 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick162
Rnd5
Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick190
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at No. 190. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick199
Rnd6
Kalen King
A tidy little value on Kalen King in the 199th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jase McClellan at Round 7, Pick 6. The roster fit checks out.
Pick232
Rnd7
KT Leveston
They let KT Leveston come to them and pounced at the 232nd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
