Larceny in the 188th pick lands the Cardinals a B-, Smith-Wade and all. The board owed the Cardinals one, and it paid up: Chau Smith-Wade, the No. 158 name on the board, sitting there at Round 6, Pick 13 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while edge rusher, running back and other spots went begging. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Oladapo has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In slot 4 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick26
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 26th pick they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
They took Tyler Guyton at par in the 35th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick66
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick71
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro in Round 3, Pick 7 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick89
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went OLB-EDGE with Javon Solomon while clear needs at edge rusher, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick104
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
They went early on Ainias Smith in pick No. 104, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133
Rnd4
Johnny Dixon
They let Johnny Dixon come to them and pounced at pick 133. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick140
Rnd5
Kitan Oladapo
They reached into another round for Kitan Oladapo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick188
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
They barely believed it either: Chau Smith-Wade still on the board at Round 6, Pick 13. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick225
Rnd7
Phil Jurkovec
A straight-up fair deal on Phil Jurkovec at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick227
Rnd7
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson at pick 227 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
