FutureA+
The Cardinals finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a A-. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Cardinals spent their marquee pick on Bo Nix, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The cost of the Cole reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
However the rest shakes out, Newton at that price is a win they earned. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Bo Nix
In pick No. 16 they get their guy under center for the next decade. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In the 27th overall pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick35
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
Nothing to complain about; Tyler Nubin went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick66
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
No drama and no debate, Mekhi Wingo went about where he belonged in the 66th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick71
Rnd3
Blake Fisher
A big swing on Blake Fisher at slot 71, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick81
Rnd3
Marist Liufau
They paid sticker price for Marist Liufau in pick 81, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick90
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
A premium they did not need to pay, Marshawn Kneeland a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105
Rnd4
Josh Newton
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 105 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick137
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
A reach on Javion Cohen in pick 137; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick222
Rnd7
Tyrone Tracy Jr.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyrone Tracy Jr. at the 222nd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick224
Rnd7
Erick All
They took Erick All at par in slot 224, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick230
Rnd7
Myles Cole
They talked themselves into Myles Cole at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick237
Rnd7
J.J. Weaver
They paid a round early for J.J. Weaver in the 237th overall pick, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
