BG23 DRAFTING FOR THECardinals
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Cardinals
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Cardinals cashed the board's mistake on Washington: B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Tahj Washington had no business being available in the 226th pick, and the Cardinals did the only sane thing and turned in the card. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The Mahogany pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 4 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick27
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In No. 27 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. More want than need.
Pick35
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
A straight-up fair deal on Darius Robinson at the 35th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick66
Rnd3
Ruke Orhorhoro
By-the-book stuff, Ruke Orhorhoro at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Pick71
Rnd3
Austin Booker
Austin Booker at pick 71 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick90
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
The board had cheaper options than Christian Mahogany at the 90th pick, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick104
Rnd4
Cam Hart
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Cam Hart while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
Pick138
Rnd5
Johnny Wilson
The board had Johnny Wilson higher than Round 5, Pick 2, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick162
Rnd5
Dylan Laube
Dylan Laube in No. 162 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick186
Rnd6
Trente Jones
They paid up for Trente Jones at the Round 6 slot when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick226
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
Steal is underselling it; Tahj Washington at slot 226 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
