A masterclass at the trade table lands the Cardinals a B-. The Cardinals clearly saw something nobody else did in Shaun Dolac, taking him 199 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Starks falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
The Burke pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback and tight end still on the board. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In slot 17 they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value.
Pick20
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In the 20th overall pick they get a featured back, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick23
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the 23rd pick they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
Pick24
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
They reached a country mile for Tate Ratledge at the Round 2 slot, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick34
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Donovan Ezeiruaku. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick35
Rnd2
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the 35th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick60
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
Nothing to complain about; Jayden Higgins went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick61
Rnd2
Wyatt Milum
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Wyatt Milum. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick65
Rnd3
Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch at pick No. 65 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick87
Rnd3
Malaki Starks
A safety of that caliber at pick 87 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick89
Rnd3
Deone Walker
Deone Walker in Round 3, Pick 25 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick96
Rnd3
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
A big swing on Antwaun Powell-Ryland at slot 96, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick102
Rnd3
Ty Robinson
Ty Robinson in the 102nd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick115
Rnd4
Tai Felton
Tai Felton at pick No. 115 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick119
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Denzel Burke adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback and tight end untouched.
Pick122
Rnd4
Willie Lampkin
Willie Lampkin in the 122nd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137
Rnd4
Cody Simon
Good price on Cody Simon in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Pick139
Rnd5
Shaun Dolac
Value said wait; Shaun Dolac in slot 139 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
