Berger should have been long gone. The Cardinals pounced, and earned a D.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cardinals did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.

They banked enough surplus on Berger to cover a lot of smaller sins. The veteran additions, Derrick Henry chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
