bbb DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots

Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a B+. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent the 238th pick on Collin Oliver, a name most had 52 spots down the list. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
The Horton pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. Adding Tyler Smith by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ashton Jeanty at No. 12 is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick13
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In the 13th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick69
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Maxwell Hairston. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick106
Rnd4
Gunnar Helm
A tidy bit of business in pick 106, where Gunnar Helm graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
Pick144
Rnd5
Tory Horton
Tory Horton at the 144th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick217
Rnd7
Alijah Huzzie
They took Alijah Huzzie at par in Round 7, Pick 1, which is nothing to complain about. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick220
Rnd7
Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins in slot 220 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick238
Rnd7
Collin Oliver
They talked themselves into Collin Oliver at Round 7, Pick 22, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
