Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesC+
FutureB-
Williams is the Commanders' new face under center. Grade: B-. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Mayes value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will need Stover to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
Caleb Williams at Round 1, Pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick36
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan in pick No. 36 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick40
Rnd2
Kris Jenkins
Kris Jenkins in slot 40 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick67
Rnd3
Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 67 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick102
Rnd4
Cade Stover
Cade Stover at No. 102 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick141
Rnd5
James Williams
James Williams slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick223
Rnd7
Dominic Lovett
Nice patience on Dominic Lovett, who had no business lasting to the 223rd pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
BJ Mayes
BJ Mayes in the 249th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
