Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
D-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB
Quarterback settled, Williams in the fold, and a D- for the Bears. Thirty-one other rooms let Jarrian Jones slide, and the Bears were the ones holding the card at pick 210. Highway robbery. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
The Frazier pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In slot 1 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick13
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 13 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in the 43rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick44
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier at No. 44 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Austin Booker
Austin Booker in pick No. 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick111
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at slot 111 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick123
Rnd4
Ainias Smith
A straight-up fair deal on Ainias Smith at the 123rd pick, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick143
Rnd5
Beau Brade
A reasonable price with a little left over, Beau Brade in pick 143. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick210
Rnd6
Jarrian Jones
Taking Jarrian Jones in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
