Draft Grade — Bears

Williams is the plan now, and the Bears grade out a C. Start where it matters. The Bears took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Every board in the league had Van Pran lower, and that gap is the story.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
They took Caleb Williams at par in Round 1, Pick 2, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick9
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In pick No. 9 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. More want than need.
Pick23
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the 23rd pick they get an island corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick67
Rnd3
Xavier Worthy
You do not let a wide receiver like Xavier Worthy reach the 67th overall pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick75
Rnd3
Sedrick Van Pran
A reach on Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick102
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher at No. 102 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick110
Rnd4
Beau Brade
By-the-book stuff, Beau Brade at slot 110 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing in pick 122 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick146
Rnd5
Max Melton
A cornerback of that caliber at the 146th pick is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
