Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall A-
ValueB- NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
The Commanders drew a line under the quarterback search with Maye: A-.

Start where it matters. The Commanders took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

They are betting McCormick proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Wiley pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Drake Maye and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In No. 4 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Kool-Aid McKinstry
In the 27th pick they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36 Rnd2 Amarius Mims
Nice patience on Amarius Mims, who had no business lasting to pick 36. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Nothing to complain about; Malachi Corley went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick72 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Good price on Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick78 Rnd3 Christian Haynes
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Christian Haynes at Round 3, Pick 14. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick85 Rnd3 Khyree Jackson
They jumped the gun on Khyree Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick90 Rnd3 Christian Jones
Christian Jones at the 90th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100 Rnd3 Mason McCormick
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mason McCormick well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick111 Rnd4 James Williams
James Williams at Round 4, Pick 11 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick137 Rnd5 Ainias Smith
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ainias Smith. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick139 Rnd5 Ben Sinnott
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ben Sinnott in No. 139. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick152 Rnd5 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in pick 152 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick186 Rnd6 Joe Milton III
They went early on Joe Milton III in pick No. 186, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick222 Rnd7 Garret Greenfield
A reasonable price with a little left over, Garret Greenfield in the 222nd pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick231 Rnd7 Jared Wiley
They will replay Jared Wiley at slot 231 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
