Draft Grade — Steelers

The Steelers found their guy under center in Daniels: D-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Steelers would have aced it. Xavier Thomas at the 217th pick is 47 spots clear of where he belonged. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
It is not that Laumea is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
A straight-up fair deal on Jayden Daniels at pick No. 10, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick59
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 2 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick82
Rnd3
Kalen King
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 82 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick110
Rnd4
Tory Horton
Tory Horton at the 110th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Pick116
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
A reach on Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 116; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick119
Rnd4
Sataoa Laumea
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 119th pick on Sataoa Laumea with running back and tight end unsolved.
Pick121
Rnd4
James Williams
James Williams in slot 121 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick127
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mohamed Kamara. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick135
Rnd4
Braden Fiske
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braden Fiske this early at the 135th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick194
Rnd6
Ainias Smith
Circle this one: Ainias Smith at Round 6, Pick 19 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick217
Rnd6
Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in pick 217 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick237
Rnd7
Duce Chestnut
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Duce Chestnut in pick No. 237, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
