Mike Ditka DRAFTING FOR THEBears

FutureA-
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Bears shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The cost of the Zinter reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That Puni pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Caleb Williams
In No. 1 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick14
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
No edge and no loss on Dallas Turner in pick 14; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Javon Bullard
Value with a capital V on Javon Bullard in the 75th pick, a genuine coup. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick76
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zak Zinter this early at slot 76. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick113
Rnd4
Dominick Puni
Nice patience on Dominick Puni, who had no business lasting to pick No. 113. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick115
Rnd4
Max Melton
Max Melton at the 115th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick122
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 22 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick136
Rnd4
Javion Cohen
A reach for Javion Cohen in pick No. 136; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick146
Rnd5
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at pick 146 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The roster fit checks out.
Pick170
Rnd5
Layden Robinson
Layden Robinson at No. 170 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick173
Rnd5
Rasheen Ali
Rasheen Ali at slot 173 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
