Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesA- FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Ty Thompson a full 128 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Barton. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 DJ Campbell
In the 25th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick50 Rnd2 T.J. Sanders
A tidy bit of business in slot 50, where T.J. Sanders graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick57 Rnd2 Smael Mondon Jr.
Value with a capital V on Smael Mondon Jr. in Round 2, Pick 25, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick82 Rnd3 Jake Majors
Jake Majors slipping to No. 82 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick83 Rnd3 Harold Fannin Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Harold Fannin Jr. at pick No. 83 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick101 Rnd3 Jack Nelson
They went early on Jack Nelson in pick 101, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick119 Rnd4 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in slot 119 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138 Rnd4 TreVeyon Henderson
The board fumbled TreVeyon Henderson all the way to Round 4, Pick 37, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick194 Rnd6 Lander Barton
They will replay Lander Barton at the 194th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick195 Rnd6 J.Michael Sturdivant
A wild overpay on J.Michael Sturdivant in No. 195, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247 Rnd7 Ty Thompson
Ty Thompson at pick 247 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick249 Rnd7 Jaishawn Barham
A linebacker of that caliber at the 249th pick is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick255 Rnd7 Sean Martin
A big swing on Sean Martin at pick No. 255, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
